ODIN, short for “Open Disk Imager in a Nutshell”, is an easy way to root and manage your Samsung devices.
You might be asking yourself, “Why would I need a disk imaging software to root my Samsung device?” When you’re rooting your phone, you have to elevate your user privileges and install a custom rom or kernel that matches your device.
With ODIN you’ll get everything you need to successfully root your Samsung device. If you’ve tried Kingo Root with little to no success in gaining full SU access to your device, you’ll definitely want to give this one a try.
What really makes ODIN stand out though is the ability to install a custom ROM and custom kernel. Some ROMs and kernels just don’t work on certain models, so having the ability to try out different disk images can seriously improve the rate of success.
While this program is free and one of the most successful tools available for Samsung Android phones and tablets, it can be hard to use. If you’ve never rooted a Samsung device before you’ll want to check out some tutorials and do some serious reading before you proceed – and remember there are no built-in backup tools included in this program, either.
It’s important to note that rooting any Android device can violate your manufacturer’s warranty and the repair warranty offered by your mobile carrier; you also run the risk of permanently disabling your device for good. Always fully back up any disk data, contact information, etc. on your device before you attempt to root your device.
Other than the standard risk of bricking your device, ODIN is good at what it does: rooting Samsung devices running Android.
Pros
- Install Custom ROMs for Your Device Some Samsung models need specific ROMs and kernels to run properly, making this app a must-have!
- 100% Free No registration fees, no yearly subscriptions, just a program that gives you full SU access to your device.
- Roots Most Samsung Tablets and Phones This app has one of the highest success rates with Samsung devices on the market.
Cons
- Steep Learning Curve This is not an app for people that are just rooting their device for the first time. If you’re new to the app, make sure you read tutorials and understand what a ROM and a kernel are before you proceed.
- Only Compatible with Samsung Devices It’s important to note that this app is designed for Samsung devices running the Android operation system – it won’t work on LG or other popular models of phones.
- No Built-in Backup This app lacks any built-in backup software, so make sure you back up your data and contacts on your own prior to running the app. We suggest using an SD card or other removable drive so you can retrieve it later.
